New Styles in Bamboo Knit!

One of the most exciting finds in fashion this fall is beautifully styled knits in bamboo fiber. We’d like to tell you about the wonderful virtues of bamboo and hope you will come and try the new items.

From an ecological perspective, bamboo is economical to grow because it grows at such a quick rate. It doesn’t require large amounts of water AND there is no need to use pesticides on the crop because bamboo is naturally anti-bacterial. It is biodegradable too.

As a wearable fabric, bamboo is softer than most refined cotton and feels very silky. It is colorfast, anti-bacterial, absorbent and wicks away moisture. Bamboo is breathable, and long-lasting. Bamboo feels and looks luxurious and expensive.

For those of you with allergies, and even those without allergies, bamboo won’t host the bacteria that breed allergens and odor. The fabric can be made in both heavy and lighter weights and therefore will be great for you in different styles throughout the year.

Modal Rayon: Another New Fabric Friend!

As is also true about bamboo, modal is natural in origin. Modal is created by spinning fibers from beech tree. It was originally developed in Austria by the Lenzing AG Company and was designed to be combined with other fibers. Modal is a variety of rayon with many improved qualities.

Modal is more water absorbent than cotton and is designed to dye just like cotton. It does not pill and is fade and shrink resistant. It doesn’t get pulled out of shape like other types of rayon. The fiber is much smoother and softer than cotton. When washed, lime deposits in the water will not stick to the fabric surface. Fabrics made from Modal fibers are long wearing and strong, yet retain their soft, silky feel through many washings.

This morning we all became aware of new ideas in fighting the war against Breast Cancer. Dr. Susan Love has been waging a 20 year fight in treating Breast Cancer. In her appearance this morning on The Today Show she said that it is now time to take the fight to cure breast cancer to a new level. Researchers have told her that they couldn’t find enough well women to gather data on the appearance of breast cells in women without breast cancer. Realizing that this was a ridiculous situation, she informed the researchers that she could get enough interested ‘well’ women who would be willing to participate in their research. She is now spearheading an effort to gather a data base of as many well women as possible for research into the causes of breast cancer.

Women will be periodically notified of new studies into the cause of breast cancer. The notifications will contain a list of qualifying conditions needed in participants to be part of the study. They would also indicate what type of sample the women would need to provide, be it a blood, tissue or urine sample for that particular study. For each study women with different health histories will be needed.

Dr. Love’s hope is that this approach will open new frontiers into the cause, diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer. Perhaps, a vaccine could be developed to prevent the disease from ever developing.

Our Newest ‘Tummy Tuck’ Additions!

Some of you may have already seen the pin-striped ‘Tummy Tuck’ dress denim trouser called ‘Greta’ by NYDJ. The ladies who have tried Greta are very pleased with its styling. In the true tradition of ‘Tummy Tuck’, Greta also makes the wearer look super sleek! Greta not only comes in BLACK and NAVY PINSTRIPES but also in SOLID BLACK. We are eagerly awaiting our next shipment and will let you know when it arrives!

Career Casual pants are another new addition. Made of polyester, rayon and spandex, they are a light-weight gabardine. Of course, the new styles have the famous ‘Tummy Tuck’ panel in the front too. We received our first shipment and are eagerly awaiting reorders!

As Charles Dickens said in his famous novel “these are the best of times and the worst of times.” While our country has many serious challenges to face, it also has great opportunities. Our citizens also need to realize that going shopping is part of the cure for the economic problems we currently face. With all these factors in mind, Jacobson’s Alumni Association has created the following mission statement for 2009:

All of us have been asked by our new president to assume a new sense of responsibility and to, whenever possible, help those less fortunate than ourselves. Therefore, Jacobson’s Alumni Association is adopting the philosophy of “Shop for a Cause.” At most of our shopping events, a portion of all sales and part of everything you spend will be donated to a different worthwhile cause. Most recently JAA conducted a very successful fashion show and boutique for the Saginaw Department of Social Services and Victims of Domestic Assault. In February we will have a tremendous fashion sale to benefit the Greater Lansing Food Bank. At all of these events, you can love what you buy and at the same time and for the same expenditure feel great about supporting important causes.

Last but not least, especially this year we are going to be very conscious about offering you stunning value. Value means much more than price, and is a reflection of what you get for your money.
